What Little Is Known About Nichols

Origins of my Nichols ancestry has so far been a tough nut to crack. I have only 2 generations past my grandfather identified. My 2nd great grandfather James Thomas Nichols (who's name is identified by my grandpa on his father's death certificate) I have estimated his birth year to be about 1843, and I'm not sure where he was born. According to his son James William Nichols he could have born just about anywhere in the world! In the 1900 Federal Census he said his father was born in Scotland and his mother born in Germany, in 1910 his father was born in the United States and his mother was born in Pennsylvania, in 1920 his father was born in New York and his mother was born in Indiana, and in 1930 his father was born in Illinois and his mother was born in Indiana....thanks grandpa. So nothing is for sure, not even the real name of James Thomas Nichols' wife. According to James William his mother's name (info given on his second marriage record) her name was Tillie Null. And the name appears to be different on James William's death certificate (informant listed as his son Oscar), there she is listed as Syna Cassel. Haven't been able to positively identify these names to be connected with James Thomas....sigh.
